Peter had fished all night and caught nothing.

Exhausted, he was washing his nets on the shore of Lake Gennesaret when a stranger stepped into his boat and asked him to push out from land. Peter obeyed. Then came the instruction that must have felt absurd: “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets.”

They had tried all night. There was nothing there.

But Peter did it anyway — and the nets filled so completely they began to tear. A second boat had to come and help, and even then both boats began to sink from the weight of the catch.

That was the moment Peter understood who was standing in his boat. He fell to his knees and said: “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man.”

Jesus answered: “Don’t be afraid. From now on you will fish for people.”

And Peter left everything — the nets, the boats, the catch of a lifetime — and followed Him.
